The hackle is a hood of mail which became independent of hauberk from the late thirteenth century
He protected the head, neck and the upper chest and back. Falling on the shoulders, already covered by the hauberk, he was a second level of protection especially useful in combat, because the risk was great to see the cutting edge of a sword drag on the helmet and break collarbones
