The tabar or tabard (probably original Germanic word) is a kind of robe made of coarse cloth for soldiers
For the knights, the tabard was coated over the armor. If it was used to show his wealth (rich fabric and coat of arms), he also had an essential role identification in battle, especially after the adoption by knights helmet totally masking their faces
